Figure Out Which Xbox Controller You Own

Connect XBOX One Controller To PC Bluetooth (Wirelessly)

To start, the Xbox Wireless Gamepad included with the Xbox Series S/X, and now widely available as the Xbox Wireless Gamepad, is nearly identical to the Xbox One’s controller. They both support Xbox wireless communication and Bluetooth, and the methods for connecting them to your PC are identical. The instructions here apply to both gamepad generations.

Original Xbox One controllers lack wireless connectivity, but the gamepads that shipped with the ;Xbox One S;and later consoles include Xbox wireless communication and Bluetooth. You can use both controllers wirelessly with your PC, but the process is different; you must get a wireless dongle for the non-Bluetooth gamepads. The good news is that Bluetooth controllers have been in production for so long that if you picked yours up in the last four years, there’s a good chance that it already has Bluetooth.

To determine whether you have a Bluetooth or non-Bluetooth Xbox controller, you need to look at the plastic surrounding the Guide button. If it’s the same plastic as the face of the controller, without any seams, you have a Bluetooth gamepad. If it’s the same plastic as the bumper buttons, with a seam between the Guide button and the controller’s face, it’s a non-Bluetooth gamepad. If it has a small, rectangular Capture button between the Menu and View buttons, and a USB-C port on the top instead of micro USB, it’s an Xbox Series controller and also has Bluetooth.

Why Doesn’t Xbox One Support Bluetooth

The Xbox One launched without Bluetooth support and half a decade later, it remains absent. It means Bluetooth controllers, headsets, keyboards, and mice aren’t compatible with the console. Microsoft has ruled out the common wireless standard for its Xbox One family, pushing its proprietary Xbox Wireless protocol instead. This in-house technology can be used by cable-free controllers and headsets on Xbox One, building an ecosystem of licensed peripherals.

If you’re an Xbox One owner, you’ve likely been using Xbox Wireless for years without even knowing it. The radio frequency module embedded in all Xbox One consoles taps into this protocol, boasting a higher-frequency connection over standard 2.4GHz Bluetooth. It primarily reduces latency, while packing support for wireless stereo audio, impulse triggers, and more on Xbox controllers. Microsoft’s Xbox Wireless is ultimately superior as the “premium” experience, though it lacks the ubiquity of Bluetooth.

A cynical mindset can also frame this as a lockdown of the Xbox accessories lineup. Microsoft has full control over the wireless Xbox gamepad range, with all wireless controllers designed internally. And while third-party headsets can use the Xbox Wireless chip, the barrier of obtaining Microsoft’s blessing remains. We’ve also seen the Xbox One welcome more accessories with formal mouse and keyboard support, though this is limited to wired or wireless adapters over USB.

Troubleshooting Tips If Your Xbox Controller Isn’t Connecting

Though the sync button attempts to make things as easy as possible, it might not work every time. If so, run through the following troubleshooting tips:

  • If you are connecting a controller wirelessly, and the Xbox button doesn’t blink when pressed, make sure you hold it down for a few more seconds – it won’t sync straight away.
  • It sounds obvious, but make sure it has enough battery life remaining. Also, make sure the batteries are properly connected; it’s surprisingly easy to get the polarity of the respective batteries the wrong way round, so it’s worth double checking.
  • If you have waited too long to connect the controller after pressing the sync button, it will stop syncing, so double check it is still flashing as you are trying to connect when trying again.
  • For PC and mobile devices, remember some Xbox controllers will not have Bluetooth support, and require a dedicated official dongle. Also, though the Xbox One and Xbox Series X / S are compatible with controllers from either generation, they are not compatible with the Xbox 360 controller.
  • If connecting with a cable, Xbox controllers have different connectors according to the generation – Xbox One’s uses a USB Micro, while the Xbox Series X / S uses a USB-C connector – so make sure you have the correct one to hand.
  • If devices still aren’t finding one another, make sure your devices are fully up to date and running the latest firmware.
